WHY IT IS NECESSARY TO USE THERMOPLASTIC MASKS WHILE RADIOTHERAPY ??

To achieve the most successful radiation therapy treatment, it is important to have the Radiation beam hit the tumor every time, while sapring as many healthy cells around the tumor as possible. To achieve this , the patient need to be in the same position every time He or She is treated. A thermopasltic mask aids in immobilizing  the patient during the tratment as well as repositioning the patient from treatment to treatment . The mask can also be marked so that the patient can be aligned with the room lasers, which may eliminate the need to mark on the skin of the patient.

HOW TO USE THE THERMOPLASTIC MASK IN THE RADIOTHERAPY TREATMENT.

1.) Warming   - Before begning the warming process, make sure that your water bath is at about 160 Degree F or 70 Degree C. Using water which is not at the corect temperature, can lead to significantly to an uneven hole pattern in the mask once it is pulled. Once the water in the bath is in proper temperature, place the thermoplastic sheet in it.

2.) Forming Thermoplastics   - When the thermoplastic becomes completly transparent, pull it out of the water and remove the excess water from the thermoplastic. Heating takes arounf 2-3 minutes, underheating or overheating the  mask, may compromise the quality of the mask.                                                                                      Carefully f orm the shape of the thermoplastic over the patient and dock the mask onto the base plate. Gently form the thermoplastic around the bony anatomy of the patient such as the nasion and chin. Make sure that the Thermoplastic is lying evenly on the skin of the patient and patient is still in the desired position for the treatment.

COOLING & STORING

It is very important to completly cool the thermoplastic, before removing them from the patient. Heat in the thermoplastic indicates that it has not finished its setting, Removing thermoplatic while still warm may result in additional shirnking as the heat dissipates from the mask without the benefit of an anatomical stopping point.                                                                                                                                                                                                      To help the cooling process it is ok to use a cool damp towel .

Thermoplastic should be stored safely at a room temperature until they are no longer needed for the patient.

These are Disposable sheets, so to get the best results, one sheet should be use for one patient only.
